Fairtrade standards

As a proud partner of Fairtrade, Hu sources 100% of its cocoa, coconut sugar, cashews, vanilla, and quinoa on Fairtrade terms. As values driven brand, we put Humanity at the forefront of everything we do to help create a positive impact for all of our fellow humans from growers to eaters.

What does Fairtrade mean?

Being certified Fairtrade means farming organizations are able to earn at least the Fairtrade minimum price, which acts as a safeguard for when market prices drop. In addition, farmers receive a Fairtrade Premium, which certified producer organizations democratically reinvest into projects of their choosing, such as training & development programs or resources to improve their farms & communities. 41% of Fairtrade cocoa premium globally goes to improving production practices.

Who is Fairtrade America?

Fairtrade America is the independent, third-party organization that works with nearly 2 million farmers and workers in the Global South. They work to secure decent working conditions, fair prices and better terms of trade so that producers can thrive and live.

A Hu trip of a lifetime

In 2024, members of the Hu team traveled to Sierra Leone to meet many of these farmers and visit communities within their cooperatives.

Unwrapping the bar

In that trip, our team learned quite a lot, but one of the core takeaways was just how positive an impact Fairtrade can have on the farmers that take part in Fairtrade. Through the use of the Fairtrade Premiums, we saw examples of cooperatives working to strengthen social bonds across villages through the building of shared community spaces, investing in health & wellbeing through creating private spaces for expecting mothers, and fortifying their businesses through collective seedling nurseries and solar drying facilities.

We saw firsthand how Fairtrade’s approach aims to empower famers and workers in support of more secure livelihoods. As a values-driven brand, we remain committed to sourcing simple and responsible ingredients in partnership with Fairtrade.

Fairtrade in action: We are Fairtrade

This October, Hu is participating in the ‘We are Fairtrade campaign sponsored by Fairtrade America, honoring one of the cocoa farmers who has made an impact within their community.

Meet the farmer

Salamatu Katta is a 29-year old Sierra Leonean cocoa farmer who’s farming like the future depends on it–because it does. During her school holidays when she was growing up, Salamatu was involved in her dad’s cocoa farm. After her father passed away, Salamatu inherited the farm.


She is now a member of the Munafa Cocoa Farmers’ Cooperative where all members cultivate their cocoa organically. As a Fairtrade farmer, she is a small-business owner who is creating a ripple effect of sustainability in her community.

Celebrating through art

At Hu, we believe in the benefits of the Fairtrade certification and have seen firsthand the positive impact it can have on communities that participate in the cooperative system. The ‘We are Fairtrade’ campaign is an opportunity to connect shoppers making decisions on how to feed themselves and their families with the incredible farmers, like Salamatu Kayta, that live across the world and make the products they know and love possible.


In making that connection and highlighting farmer stories, we hope shoppers continue to be made aware of where their food comes from and the impact their purchase can have in better supporting the livelihoods of farmers within the Fairtrade network.
