Celebrate Pride Month | A Chance to Give Back
History Behind Pride Month
With Pride month here, we wanted to take some time to reflect on the monumental and historic moment that took place here in our home city of New York. June is a month to remember our collective history, celebrate progress, and continue to recognize the fight for equal rights for all Humans is ongoing.
Pride started with protests led by LGBTQ people, largely transgender women of color, who continuously confronted police brutality and discrimination in the fight for equality. On June 27th, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a Greenwich Village bar that had become a staple of New York City’s gay community. Tired of the ongoing raids, community members fought back, striking what would become known as The Stonewall Riots.
One year later, the first Gay Pride March was held on Christopher street, commemorating and celebrating what became a rallying moment in this liberation movement. Over the next 50 years, the LGBTQ community would see the Supreme Court uphold and legalize gay marriage as well as push forward progress in protections under housing, employment, and public accommodations. While tremendous strides have been made for gay rights, violence and discrimination are far too prevalent. 2021 marks the highest number of anti-transgender bills in history in the United States. Until every Human can safely live freely and authentically, the fight will go on.
A Chance to Give Back: The Ali Forney Center
This week, we’re donating 5% of all hukitchen.com sales to the Ali Forney Center for LGBTQ+ homeless youth. The Ali Forney Center assists over 2,000 youths per year through a 24-hour Drop-In Center which provides over 70,000 meals annually, medical and mental health services through an on-site clinic, and a scattered-site housing program. We are so proud to support the Ali Forney Center and give back. Love is love.
